What We Know Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

No fewer than 16 lives perished and more than 40 were wounded when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities have called a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, authorities have confirmed the death toll is 16, which includes one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 injured people were admitted to hospital.

The deceased have not yet been publicly named, but authorities state their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Known as a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the moments before the shooting, explaining they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister declared that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the statement continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed in the incident, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, many remain receiving treatment, with a number in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He described he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
