UK, UN and EU Decry an ‘Egregious Wrong’ of Pro-Democracy Activist Jimmy Lai’s Lengthy Imprisonment.
The judicial ruling of media publisher and British citizen Jimmy Lai to two decades behind bars in Hong Kong has elicited global rebuke. Human rights organizations and several nations have described the legal verdicts influenced by political considerations.
Widespread Disapproval and Demands for Freedom
UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper declared that the two-decade sentence is effectively a de facto life term for the elderly man. She labeled the legal case as having political underpinnings via a statute designed to silence those who speak out against China. Cooper called on Hong Kong's authorities to end his ordeal and release him to his family.
“This verdict illustrates how the vague and overly broad provisions of Hong Kong’s legal framework can be interpreted in breach of universal rights standards,” said UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk.
A representative for the European Union, Anitta Hipper, remarked that Brussels “deeply regrets” the conclusion of the judicial process and called for his prompt and absolute freedom.
Details of the Legal Proceedings
Jimmy Lai, the founder of the now-shuttered Apple Daily tabloid, was detained following the introduction of a sweeping legal statute in Hong Kong. The law was introduced by Chinese authorities following widespread unrest which Lai and his newspaper supported.
He was sentenced on counts of plotting to create inflammatory publications and plotting to collaborate with external actors. The latter charges were based on the disputed legislation.
Family Concerns
Lai’s son, Sebastien, shared that his father fears dying alone without seeing his family again. The legal team labeled him the “world’s highest profile political prisoner” in custody today.
Sebastien Lai commented that while the outcome was foreseen, its reality was harsher than imagined, though it brought some “solace” that the legal proceedings had concluded.
Diplomatic Fallout
The sentencing has influenced the bilateral relationship. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he discussed Lai’s case in talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping earlier this year. Yet, any potential progress towards his release is uncertain.
Sebastien Lai queried the upside to improved bilateral relations while his father remains imprisoned, saying it felt “somewhat insensitive.”
Official Responses
Conversely, the officials from China welcomed the court's decision. Hong Kong’s top official John Lee claimed the sentence manifested that “justice is served.”
The mouthpiece of China’s foreign ministry, Lin Jian, described Lai as the “primary instigator” behind the 2019-2020 demonstrations and stated the prosecution was “legitimate and lawful.” He advised international actors not to interfere in China’s internal affairs.
A Representative Verdict
Organizations like Reporters Without Borders have described Lai as a figure representing diminishing media freedom in Hong Kong. Reporters Without Borders' director general remarked it was a “dark day for those who care about a independent media.”
Boasting a close to 100% conviction rate for charges under the security law, Lai’s harsh punishment is viewed as the toughest yet handed down under the controversial legislation.
