Torrential Downpours Aggravate Circumstances for Uprooted Gazans, UN Alert
Persistent rains over the past week have compounded the extremely difficult situation of the vast number of evacuated residents in the Gaza Strip, as reported by relief agencies.
"Horrendous" Night Poses Grave Risks
A official detailed the weather overnight as "terrible", with rain so severe that as much as 15cm (6in) of water gathered on the ground.
"Last night was really difficult for the families. The storms were so intense... And the gales were so forceful," said the representative.
Officials express significant worry that minors living in tents in soaked attire will contract hypothermia and other illnesses.
Fatalities and Extensive Destruction
Health authorities have confirmed that one baby has succumbed from hypothermia and a minimum of 11 other people have lost their lives in roof cave-ins caused by the severe weather.
Other reports suggest a greater death toll. Spokespeople said that several structures had fully given way and many others had been partly destroyed.
- Roughly 55,000 families impacted by the weather.
- More than 40 official refuges submerged.
- Numerous individuals compelled to find new shelter.
Aid Operations Seen as Insufficient
Organizations have increased shipments of tarpaulins, warm covers and clothes following the ceasefire started, but they have said there is still not enough aid getting in.
"We are working relentlessly to provide that assistance and to distribute it, but the size of the needs is so enormous that we are faced with thousands of people and minors who are truly struggling every night," stated one official.
Long-Term Challenges and Ceasefire Provisions
The next stage of the ceasefire encompasses proposals for the reconstruction of Gaza, along with post-war governance, the pullback of troops, and other conditions.
Relief bodies have highlighted the necessity for "increased and sustained relief to respond to immediate and future requirements."
The war was initiated by an offensive in October 2023. Following campaigns have caused a high number of casualties in the region, according to health ministry reports.
