The network's Top New Show of This Year Gets a Major Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.
Last October, the late-night programming block saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the channel introduced a fresh animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a animated take of a serene talk show. At a time often marked by cynicism, this show's sincerity struck a chord and helped it become a breakout hit.
A Significant Investment
In mid-December, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The series centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Network Praise
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who found the show and championed its peculiarly charming sensibility.
"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about watching this charming family navigate their daily lives.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to evolve comedy past its long-running layer of irony. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.
“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
The Path Forward
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially catalyze that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to bask in the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
