The English golfer Clinches Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Thrilling Play-Off Battle Versus Tommy Fleetwood
Aaron Rai demonstrated exceptional composure to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, defeating Tommy Fleetwood in a tense play-off after a topsy-turvy final round of competition.
The Englishman sank a crucial birdie from just over eight foot to seal the win, echoing his sole prior tournament triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a playoff victory against Fleetwood.
Sunday's Play Excitement
The champion started the last day with a one-shot lead over countryman Tommy Fleetwood and Denmark’s Højgaard. He finished with a total score of 263 after a up-and-down, 67 closing round that included seven birdies and two bogeys.
The challenger edged one shot clear with the 16th and 17th remaining after a birdie on the sixteenth, but his rival tied it up again on the 17th and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie putt to claim victory on the final hole.
Playoff Decider
This led to a play-off at Yas Links where the eventual winner prevailed to claim the championship and $1.5 million (£1.13 million) in prize money.
{“Tommy is a world-class player and an even better individual. To compete alongside him the final two rounds was really special,” said Rai, the current world No 30. “You’re so concentrated on playing the round and maintaining focus, it’s difficult to describe at the present how it feels. It is amazing to be holding the trophy.”
Notable Performances
The Northern Irish star found himself a bit too far to do, coming up one shot behind in a tie for third with Højgaard, after a stunning 10-under final round of 62. It was his best-ever round on the European Tour, including eight birdie putts and an eagle.
Højgaard carded six birdie putts of his as well, but his chances of topping the standings were dented by a dropped shot on the 12th. English golfer Richard Mansell hit an excellent last round 63 to end up in a tie for fifth place with Australian Daniel Hillier.
