Russell Wilson Fires Back at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Regarding Quarterback Remarks

New York Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson did not hold back on online platforms this Tuesday, responding to recent comments from his former coach Sean Payton.

"Classless... but not shocked...," Wilson declared via social media. "Had no idea you're still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the media."

The quarterback's remarks pointed to the notorious bounty scandal issue from 2009 to 2011, when Payton was coaching the Saints.

At that time, the league determined that the Saints had incentivized players for making hard hits on rival teams. As a result, Payton was suspended from the NFL for a full year.

What Sparked the Latest Dispute

The quarterback's reaction came after Payton made remarks following the Broncos' remarkable comeback win over the Giants. The coach suggested that the Giants had "discovered new energy" with their new QB, who has taken over Wilson as the starting quarterback.

Additionally, Payton implied that he had told team owner John Mara that he would rather playing against Wilson instead of Dart.

"I was talking to John Mara recently and I said, 'We hoped that the switch would've happened well after our game,'" Payton commented.

Context of the Coach-QB Partnership

  • The quarterback was traded to the Broncos from the Seahawks in 2022 and inked a five-year, $245M contract.
  • The Broncos went 4-11 in his first season prior to the team hired Payton, who was coming back to the sidelines after a stint in TV commentary.
  • Payton replaced Wilson 15 games into the 2023 season, a decision that prevented the player from suffering an injury.

Had Wilson remained on the roster by spring 2024, his $37 million pay for 2025 would have been guaranteed. In the end, Wilson was let go, marking the ugly breakup between the player and his mentor.
