Indonesian officials initiated an inquiry after the US Food and Drug Administration identified Caesium-137, a nuclear substance, in a shipment of chilled coated prawns sent by a local firm.

Officials issued an advisory advising distributors and retailers to dispose of the goods and avoid selling it, even though the detected amount was far below the authority's intervention limit. They noted that the amount of Caesium-137 it had found would not pose an immediate risk to the public.

The FDA explained: “The main impact on health of concern after longer term, ongoing small amount contact (for example through eating of contaminated food or water over a period) is an elevated risk of the disease, resulting from damage to DNA within body cells.”

Extensive Pollution and Health Checks

Radiation tests revealed at least 22 factories in the manufacturing area were contaminated. The official team did not name the 21 other production facilities, but confirmed they would promptly undergo cleanup processes carried out by the country's atomic energy agency.

The environment minister declared that people residing in highly polluted zones would be relocated until the site was decontaminated, adding that the safety of the inhabitants was the “top priority”.

Medical authorities additionally performed examinations on nearby workers and residents living near the manufacturing zone, finding nine individuals who showed signs for exposure to Caesium-137. These individuals were sent to a hospital before being cleared to go back.
