President Trump Calls Families of Injured Military Personnel to the White House
President Trump revealed on Sunday that he has invited the loved ones of a National Guard member killed last week to come to the White House.
He added that he conversed with her family and they were “heartbroken”.
Background on the Devastating Shooting
US army specialist Beckstrom, 20, was killed in a shooting on Wednesday in Washington DC.
Her colleague, Staff Sgt Andrew Wolfe, 24, continues receiving treatment in critical condition.
Vigils across the state have taken place in their honor.
White House Call
The president said he’s talked about a visit to the White House for the parents of both soldiers of the West Virginia Guard.
“I said: ‘When you’re ready, because that’s a tough thing, arrive at the White House. We’re going to pay tribute to her,” the president told journalists. “And in the same way with him, no matter the outcome.”
Community Response
Mourners came together over the weekend at Webster County high school in West Virginia to remember Beckstrom.
Both the soldiers had been serving with the military unit as part of Trump’s government program to aid policing efforts in the capital.
Paying Tribute to the Soldier
“Sarah was the individual that teachers wished for. She behaved with calm resilience, a contagious smile and a optimistic attitude that lifted those around her,” the principal, the leader of her former high school, stated to the press. “She was caring, compassionate and always willing to assist people.”
Memorial details for Beckstrom are still being arranged.
Legal Steps and Policy Changes
Authorities have accused a twenty-nine-year-old individual from Afghanistan with one count of homicide and two counts of attempted murder while armed.
The event caused the Trump administration to pause asylum processing and halt providing entry permits to holders of Afghan passports.
Condition of Wolfe
The airman, a native of the city, enlisted in February 2019 and is a 2019 graduate of Musselman high school, as reported by the Associated Press.
He remains under medical supervision and is “in a critical fight”, the state’s governor Morrisey mentioned on a news program.
Attorney general Bondi stated on the program that she aimed to visit his relatives.
Impact of Sarah Beckstrom
Sarah, from Summersville, completed her education from Webster County High in 2023 and began her service not long after, working as a law enforcement officer with distinction, according to the military.
“She had a lot of kindness and she certainly had courage,” the governor informed the gathering at the memorial. “Though her life ended too soon, she has made an impact that’s going to endure.”
