Igor Jesus Fires Twice as The Reds Round Off European Group Stage with Win over Hungarian Opponents

Forest striker in action
The Brazilian forward has now notched eleven strikes in every tournament for Nottingham Forest this season.

At a Glance

  • Forest were already through to the knockout round.
  • Bence Otvos own goal gives Nottingham Forest a first-half lead.
  • The striker's fifth goal in Europe puts the team in control.
  • Forward adds a third with a sharp finish in the latter period.
  • James McAtee rounds off a excellent display with a penalty.

The Brazilian attacker found the net on two occasions as Nottingham Forest concluded the group stage of the European competition with a comfortable triumph against their Hungarian visitors at the home stadium.

The hosts had already secured a berth in the next qualifying round and went into this fixture with a slim possibility of making the top eight, although they required several results to go their way.

Those results failed to materialize but this confident performance will give the supporters confidence that their team can navigate the two-legged play-off to advance to the last 16.

Kristoffer Zachariassen did hit the post with a header inside the opening stages for the away team – coached by ex-Premier League forward Robbie Keane – but it was all Forest from then on.

Forest opened the scoring in the 17th minute when a delivery from midfield was deflected in by the defender and added a second four minutes later – Jesus squeezing a shot in at the back post for his 10th goal of the campaign.

Jesus' eleventh goal arrived early in the second half when he made a perfectly-timed run to escape the backline and then drive an effort beyond the shot-stopper.

The third strike ended Ferencvaros' hopes of mounting a recovery and instead the hosts scored again when the excellent McAtee converted a spot-kick after a foul by the unfortunate Bence Otvos inside the penalty area on Dan Ndoye.

Europe's secondary club competition knockout phase play-off lottery takes place on Friday, 30 January (12:00 GMT), where Forest might face either Fenerbahce or Panathinaikos.

"It's more than the scoreline, there was that atmosphere about it. I want these players to do well as a unit, the whole squad," said Forest boss Sean Dyche.

"That was another stride forward, but it is a good one."

Forest Analysis: Jesus Catches Eye as New Signing Observes from Stands

Jesus has been a standout performer for Nottingham Forest in Europe this term with six of his eleven strikes scored in the Europa League.

This double also means he has got three goals in his previous two outings and the threat of a challenge for his place in the forward line could be spurring him on.

Napoli striker Lorenzo Lucca was last week signed on loan and he was observing this game from the directors' box.

This development may well have been on the striker's thoughts as he was impressive against Ferencvaros, producing two excellent finishes and overall being a menace to the visitors' defence with his speed and runs.

Jesus was not alone in catching the eye, with James McAtee turning in his finest display in a Forest jersey since signing from Manchester City in the previous transfer window, while Dan Ndoye also impressed.

These encouraging performances will give the club some fresh hope as they switch focus to pulling further away from the bottom three when they host Crystal Palace on Sunday.

"The minimum requirement is a response," continued the manager.

"I've never questioned their commitment or their loyalty or integrity. It is just about displaying your ability.

"McAtee was very good and Dan Ndoye was incredibly lively. Igor got another two and these are good signs."
