The original creators of the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has stated how corporate owner the multinational conglomerate prevented the launch for a new pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.

Ben Cohen, that established the company alongside his partner, announced that he will independently develop the controversial product as part of an individual series highlighting issues Ben & Jerry's has been barred from addressing publicly.

Ongoing Conflict Involving Founders and Corporate Owner

The recent development intensifies the ongoing disagreement among the world-famous dessert company with Unilever, the British packaged goods corporation which has owned Ben & Jerry's since 2000.

The co-founders have claimed that the parent company along with its ice cream arm Magnum unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's from "honouring its social mission".

The Fruit Flavor as a Symbol of Solidarity

The entrepreneur announced through social media that he is creating a new watermelon-flavored sorbet, requesting consumer ideas for naming options and additional components.

“I'm doing what they couldn't,” the founder commented from his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored ice cream that calls for lasting ceasefire in Palestine and calls for repairing the damage that was done there.”

The watermelon has become a symbol of support for Palestinians due to its colors, which closely resemble those of the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.

Historical Social Engagement plus Current Changes

Several years ago, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of their merchandise in areas occupied by Israel, resulting in the parent company selling their Israel business over to a local licensee, thereby permitting ongoing distribution within the occupied West Bank.

This upcoming product line will be created through Ben's Best, the activist ice cream brand which originally created in 2016 for endorsing former US presidential candidate Senator Sanders with the product "Bernie's Return".

Leadership Shifts and Future Plans

The founder stated that he will develop other frozen dessert varieties that address issues which Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking about openly due to corporate restrictions.

This development comes after partner Mr. Greenfield resigned from the company recently, following decades of involvement, citing worries regarding how the company's autonomy was undermined following Unilever's decision to curb their advocacy work.

At that time, Mr. Cohen remarked how "Jerry has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was deeply distressing him."

"My heart compels me to keep working inside the company to advocate for corporate autonomy so that it can achieve its ethical purpose, the values which established its foundation and has maintained for over 40 years," he explained to journalists.
