Anthony Barry Explains His Approach: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.
A decade ago, Anthony Barry featured at a lower division club. Currently, he is focused to assist the England manager win the World Cup next summer. The road from player to coach commenced through volunteering with the youth team. He recalls, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” and it captivated him. He had found his destiny.
Staggering Ascent
The coach's journey stands out. Commencing in a senior role at Wigan, he built a name for innovative drills and great man-management. His stints with teams led him to elite sides, while also serving in roles with national teams with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He's coached stars like world-class talents. Currently, in the England setup, it’s full-time, the “pinnacle” according to him.
“All begins with a vision … Yet I'm convinced that dedication shifts obstacles. You dream big but then you bring it down: ‘How can we achieve it, gradually?’ We aim for World Cup victory. But dreams won’t get it done. We have to build a methodical process enabling us to have the best chance.”
Focus on Minutiae
Passion, particularly on fine points, is central to his philosophy. Putting in long hours under the sun—sometimes the moon, too, they both test boundaries. The approach involve psychological profiling, a heat-proof game model for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and building a true team. The coach highlights “Team England” and avoids language including "pause".
“You’re not coming here for a holiday or a break,” Barry says. “We had to build something that attracts the squad and they're pushed that returning to club duty feels easier.”
Driven Leaders
The assistant coach says and Tuchel as highly ambitious. “Our goal is to master each element of play,” he states. “We seek to command the whole ground and that’s what we spend many of our days on. We must not just to keep up of the trends but to surpass them and set new standards. This is continuous to have this problem/solution-finding mentality. And to simplify complexity.
“We get 50 days together with the team ahead of the tournament. We must implement an intricate approach that offers a strategic upper hand and we have to make it so clear in our 50 days with them. It's about moving it from idea to information to understanding to action.
“To build a methodology that allows us to be productive in the 50 days, it's crucial to employ the whole 500 we’ll have had since we took the job. During periods without the team, we need to foster connections with each player. It's essential to invest time on the phone with them, observing them live, feel them, touch them. If we just use the 50 days, it's impossible.”
Upcoming Matches
The coach is focusing on the last two for the World Cup preliminaries – against Serbia at Wembley and away to Albania. England have guaranteed a spot in the tournament after six consecutive victories without conceding a goal. Yet, no let-up is planned; quite the opposite. Now is the moment to strengthen the squad's character, for further momentum.
“We are both certain that the football philosophy must reflect all the positives from the top division,” Barry says. “The physicality, the flexibility, the robustness, the integrity. The Three Lions kit should be harder than ever to get but light to wear. It must resemble a cloak not protective gear.
“To make it light, we need to provide an approach that enables them to play freely as they do in club games, that feels natural and allows them to take the handbrake off. They must be stuck less in thinking and more in doing.
“There are emotional wins available to trainers in the first and final thirds – starting moves deep, attacking high up. But in the middle area of the pitch, those 24 metres, we believe play has stagnated, especially in England's top flight. Coaches have extensive data now. They can organize – structured defenses. We are focusing to speed up play in that central area.”
Thirst for Improvement
His desire for improvement knows no bounds. While training for the Uefa pro licence, he felt anxious regarding the final talk, as his cohort contained luminaries like Lampard and Carrick. To enhance his abilities, he entered the most challenging environments imaginable to hone his presentations. One was HMP Walton in Liverpool, where he also took inmates in a football drill.
Barry graduated in 2020 at the top of the class, and his research paper – about dead-ball situations, in which he examined thousands of throw-ins – was published. Frank was one of those impressed and he recruited the coach on to his staff with the Blues. After Lampard's dismissal, it said plenty that the team dismissed virtually all of his coaches but not Barry.
The next manager at Chelsea took over, and, four months later, they secured European glory. After Tuchel's exit, Barry remained with Potter. Once Tuchel resurfaced at Munich, he brought Barry over from Chelsea and back alongside him. The Football Association consider them a duo like previous management pairs.
