American flight controllers are increasingly looking for second jobs and calling in sick, as they continue to work without pay amid the government shutdown, the transportation secretary has announced.

"The controllers are wearing thin," Sean Duffy told a news outlet on Sunday, as some flights were halted on the California shoreline due to personnel deficits.

Following the government shut down on October 1st, flight controllers, who are deemed essential workers, were instructed to keep doing their jobs without pay.

But a number have been missing, causing airports to stop or slow their plane traffic, which has exacerbated setbacks due to weather and other issues.

Over three thousand American flights were postponed on Sunday, and Duffy said he anticipates the circumstances to deteriorate further.

"I am seeing the pressure," Duffy said in an discussion on a weekend program, noting that he had spoken to multiple professionals to listen to their worries firsthand.

"They are pursuing side jobs, they're out there looking, 'Should I drive Uber, am I able to secure an alternative of income to cover expenses?'" he added.

Duffy added that on the previous day twenty-two notifications at airports indicated flights would be delayed due to a shortage of workers - one of the highest since the shutdown started.

The American federal closure entered its twenty-sixth day on the weekend, making it the second most extended shutdown in history.

He has consistently cautioned that flight authorities would slow down the quantity of planes in the air if there is a shortage of safety personnel.

In his interview, he would not answer straightforwardly when asked if it was safe to travel by air in the United States, and instead issued a personal plea to the professionals.

"I need my staff focused on the airspace, not on the finances at their households," the official said.
