A Devastating Change Just One Year Has Brought in the United States
One year ago, the situation was utterly distinct. Prior to the US presidential election, considerate citizens could acknowledge America's serious imperfections – its inequities and imbalance – but they could still identify it as America. A free society. A place where constitutional order meant something. A nation headed by a respectable and ethical public servant, despite his elderly years and declining health.
Currently, this autumn, numerous citizens barely recognize the country we inhabit. People suspected of being unauthorized foreigners are rounded up and pushed into vans, at times blocked from fair treatment. The left side of the White House – is undergoing demolition to build a lavish ballroom. Donald Trump is persecuting his political rivals or alleged foes and insisting the justice department surrender an enormous amount of taxpayer money. Soldiers with weapons are being sent to US urban areas under fabricated reasons. The defense headquarters, relabeled the Defense Ministry, has practically liberated itself of regular press examination while it uses what could amount to nearly $1tn from citizen taxes. Institutions, attorney offices, news companies are submitting from leader's menaces, and wealthy elites are treated like members of the royal family.
“America, only a few months ahead of its 250-year mark as the world’s leading democracy, has tipped over the edge toward dictatorship and extremism,” a noted author, stated this past summer. “Finally, faster than I believed likely, it transpired in this country.”
Each day begins to new horrors. And it is difficult to grasp – and painful to realize – how severely declined we have become, and the speed at which it unfolded.
Nevertheless, we understand that the leader was duly elected. Following his profoundly alarming initial presidency and even after the alerts that came with the awareness of Project 2025 – even after the president personally said publicly he intended to be a dictator just on day one – sufficient voters selected him over the other candidate.
As terrifying as the current reality is, it's more daunting to realize that we are just several months under this leadership. How will three more years of this deterioration find us? And if the three years turns into an prolonged era, as there is no one to restrain this president from deciding that a third term is essential, maybe for national security reasons?
Admittedly, not everything is hopeless. We will have legislative votes next year which might create a new balance of power, in case Democrats retake either chamber of the legislature. There are public servants who are trying to apply some accountability, such as lawmakers that are initiating an inquiry regarding the effort to money grab by federal prosecutors.
And a leadership election three years from now could start the path to healing just as the prior selection put us on this disappointing trajectory.
We see countless citizens demonstrating in the streets throughout communities, like they performed recently in the No Kings rallies.
An ex-cabinet member, stated lately that “the dormant powerhouse of America is stirring”, similar to past following the Red Scare in the 1950s or throughout the sixties activism or throughout the seventies crisis.
During those times, the unstable nation eventually was righted.
The author states he understands the signals of that revival and observes it occurring now. For proof, he references the large-scale demonstrations, the broad, cross-party resistance to a broadcaster's firing and the near-unanimous defiance by media to accept military mandates they only publish authorized information.
“The sleeping giant perpetually exists inactive before certain corruption turns extremely harmful, an specific act so offensive toward public welfare, some brutality so disruptive, that he is forced but to awaken.”
It's a positive outlook, and I respect his knowledgeable stance. Perhaps he will be validated.
At the same time, the big questions endure: is the US able to ever recover? Is it possible to restore its position internationally and its adherence to the rule of law?
Or do we need to admit that the historical project worked for a while, and then – swiftly, totally – ended?
My cynical mind suggests that the final scenario is correct; that everything might be gone. My positive feelings, though, advises me that we must try, through all methods we can.
Personally, as a media critic, that involves urging journalists to live up, more completely, to their duty of overseeing leadership. For others, it may be working on election efforts, or planning demonstrations, or developing approaches to protect voting rights.
Under twelve months back, we were in an alternate reality. Twelve months later? Or three years from now? The fact is, we don’t know. Our sole course is to attempt to continue fighting.
